In this article AJR is going to discuss Keeping Website Content Fresh And Up to Date
Awhile back Google announced another major change in the way it ranks website pages. The search giant updated its algorithms to give a greater priority to “fresh” website content. The rationale behind this change is that people online are generally seeking information and up to date news on current events or the latest developments in a particular area.
The changes do not impact all searches, for example someone searching on “Web Design Content” isn’t looking for the most up to date information. The Google algorithms are smart enough to take the context of that search into account, but Google estimate that the new update will impact about 35% of all searches.
So the price question is – how can we keep our content fresh and up to date? There are two parts to this. Firstly it’s more important than ever before that your website content is regularly updated. A content management system for your website is an absolute must have tool for your business website. Google has and will penalize websites that very rarely change and / or update their website content for a while, and this update only builds on that trend.
The number two important point is that your updates need to be fresh! How does Google judge freshness? Well in summary it’s looking for information on recent topics or trends that it has seen building on the web.
A news system on your website like a blog that provides articles and update (Like our blog!) is the perfect way to improve its freshness and update your content. You can use your blog / news system to announce new products and services and also changes to your services, and generally reflect on industry news and new developments. This last point of responding to changes in your industry is a great way of convincing Google that your site is somewhere that visitors will want to visit to read the latest articles and blog posts.
The great thing about an active website is not only does it look good to Google – but more importantly it looks good to your visitors and potential customers as this shows your active passionate about what you do as you pay attention to detail and this gains trust!. Combined with other social media integration such as commenting, and sharing (Twitter, Google +, Facebook) a news system and website blog can turn your static dusty site into a lively information resource that will keep visitors, and customers returning to your website on a regular basis.
